about
A Note from Julia:
This song was initially inspired by an NPR interview with Donovan Campell, author of Joker One. Mr. Campbell was a US Marine commander serving in Iraq in 2003-2004, and both the Fresh Air interview and the memoir describe his experiences there. During the interview, Mr. Campbell is physically unable to discuss some of his more tragic and gruesome experiences.
The song JO is a reaction to this interview and book, exploring the consequences of a nation blinded to the horrors of its own wars not only because of internal ignorance, but also because of the sheer emotional impossibility of the war's participants to recount its traumas. The piece also attempts to musically describe a "firefight", or sudden violent insurgent encounter, through the use of rapidly changing textures and disorienting meter.
A growing concern for the religious implications of our multi-fronted wars evolves in the lyrics of this piece, just as a growing religious undertone evolves in the memoir Joker One. Passages from Thomas Mann's Faust are referenced in the concluding sections.
Many of the children orphaned by our wars are stranded in their ruined homelands; international adoption standards require government paperwork from the child's home country, and in the case of Iraq and Afghanistan, the newly formed governments are incapable of handling this red tape. Thousands of women and children are left as unwanted refugees as the result of these and other wars. If you choose to pay for your download of JO (for Ramadi), 100%, that's right, 100% of your payment will be donated to Refugees International. I will personally match the first $50 in donations. Please help me help displaced persons worldwide, and thank you!
